| Abstract: |
The physician Wojcech Jastrzebowski founded Ergonomics more than 150 years ago. At that time,
physical issues governed the domain in adapting work to fit the needs of man. Improvements of work
consisted in establishing quantitative limits preventing acute and long term negative impacts of work
on health.
Today, physical issues are still important to be considered in the layout of work. However,
information processing in man has dramatically gained importance at work boosting the involvement
of cognitive sciences in ergonomics. Sophisticated models evolved in the past decades describing
cognitive issues of work and aiming to improve conditions at work. However, the analogous
approach of quantifying limits of workload, as has been adopted in physical ergonomics, still tries
hard to gain ground in the layout of work. Interestingly, basis for quantifying limits in informatory
work have been founded in the 50ies and 60ies of the last century.

| Biographie: |
Marino Menozzi studied physics at ETH in Zurich. He conducted a doctoral research work at
the Institute of Hygiene and applied Physiology of the Swiss Federal Institute of technology.
His thesis on "vision and displays" was completed in 1987 and awarded by the ETH Zürich.
He defended his habilitation with the title "Visual Complaints" in 1999 and received the venia
legendi for human factors in 2000. From 2002 to 2004 he stayed at the Space Medicine
Research Centre at Nagoya University (Prof. K. Koga) and in industry (R&D Essilor
company, France).
Marino Menozzi´s lectures at different universities in ergonomics, product design, vision and
physiological optics and in psychophysics and he was director of the masters of advanced
studies in "Work + Health" at ETH Zürich. From 2005 to 2008, Marino Menozzi was
president of the Swiss Society for Ergonomics as well as president of suissepro, an umbrella
association with about 2000 members incorporating ergonomists, hygienists, occupational
physicians and safety experts. |
