General & Special Laboratory Facilities

The Center for Medical Research (ZMF) offers three types of laboratories: (1) Conventional laboratories which are assigned to individual research groups for the duration of their projects, (2) Core laboratories for shared use by all researchers at the ZMF, and (3) Restricted access laboratories for experimentation requiring special equipment and/or safety measures.

Core laboratories specialize in key technologies, such as PCR, ultracentrifugation, electroporation, fluorescence microscopy, ELISA, histology, imaging, etc. In addition, numerous laboratories located throughout the building offer space for storage of biological material in -80°C freezers or in liquid nitrogen tanks. Restricted access laboratories comprise radioisotope labs, labs for work involving biosafety levels 2 and 3, and Biomedical Research Laboratories.

A well-trained permanent staff ensures efficient access and appropriate use of the entire laboratory infrastructure. In addition, researchers at the ZMF are offered expert assistance with all kinds of questions and scientific problems that may arise throughout the research process.
The center also offers temporary use of its infrastructure - capacities permitting - to scientists from other academic institutions as well as from industry on a fee-for-service basis.
